Max Howland - Queensland Gliding

 in the 50's, 60's and 70's

Compiled by Kevin Rodda based on photos, notes, letters and log book entries provided by

Max Howland, ex WWII pilot and instructor ... a pioneer of gliding in Queensland.

In a 20 year period from 1956, Max Howland (pictured above with Marj Pegler after they had set the Australian Two-Seater Record at the Narromine Nationals in 1962) flew 2,259 hours in gliders. This included 3,500 instructional flights totaling hours and 340 hours of cross country flights totaling 40,000 miles. In 1965, Max became the first "Triple Diamond" pilot to be recorded on the Australian register. He won the Australian Championship in 1968, represented Australia at the 12th World Soaring Championships in the USA in 1970 and was Chairman of the Task Setting Committee at the Waikerie World Comps in 1973/4. Max's contribution to gliding has been recognised by him being a worthy recipient of the GFA's  prestigious Hoinville Award.
