In
a 20 year period from 1956, Max Howland (pictured above with
Marj Pegler after they had set
the Australian Two-Seater Record
at the Narromine Nationals in 1962) flew 2,259 hours
in gliders. This included 3,500 instructional flights totaling hours and
340 hours of cross country flights totaling
40,000 miles. In 1965,
Max became the first "Triple Diamond"
pilot to be recorded on the Australian register. He won the Australian
Championship in 1968, represented Australia at the 12th World
Soaring Championships in the USA in 1970 and was Chairman of
the Task Setting Committee at the Waikerie World Comps in
1973/4. Max's contribution to
gliding has been recognised by
him being a worthy recipient of
the GFA's prestigious Hoinville
Award. |
